WEEK ROUNDUP

This week has been both crazy and fun. A lot of long hours at work was balanced with quality time at home. My highlight of the week was putting an impromptu bad dance party at home with Anthony (King of bad dance) to shake off the lousy day I had. We also hosted a really fun dinner and served an excellent confit du canard prepared by hubby of course. We saved the duck fat to make a perfect a potato galette for brunch this weekend. Tomorrow is the start if Eid and although I’ll be working, I’m going to try to enjoy it starting off with a ballet production on Friday, arranging my closet and having a ‘Smash’ TV marathon one evening (I’m hooked!).

Here’s a snapshot of my week (click on thumbnail to enlarge photo). Have a great weekend and Eid Mubarak!

D.I.Y. MAKEUP EDITION

Before

My makeup drawer had been organized not so long ago but lately I’ve been finding myself tossing my makeup into the drawer and not in their proper container. It’s partly because the containers doesn’t fit perfectly in our custom made drawer (it’s a weird size) and they tend to move around a lot. After a month of actively looking for containers or divider that fit, I decided to D.I.Y it instead using leftover foam board and carton in the house. First thing was laying out my everyday makeup products (the rest is in a makeup case) and configure a division between my face, cheeks, eyes, and lip products. Next is making use that there’s enough space to hold additional purchases (it needs to be future proof) and then the rest is all about the DIY details. My new set-up works really well and it makes getting ready in the morning much more pleasurable and organized. Here’s a look at how I DIY’d my makeup drawer.

After

Tools: steel ruler, cutter, glue, tape, scissors, marker, pencil, measuring tape, cutting board, carton and foam board

D.I.Y lipstick holder I found on Youtube

Configure items and draw the divider with a pencil. Take into account the width of the divider while measuring.

Cut dividers and use glue to stick onto the base foam. Hold for 30seconds.

Once dry, assemble divider in the drawer and start filling in

I used a clear container with adjustable dividers to store my blushes, eye products and cheek stains

My eyeshadows used to be in my 18 eyeshadow palette. I transferred them to a 4 palette and created color combinations. I now have neutrals, all-round eyeshadow, blues, pinks and greens

BULLETS ON OUR WALL

Our house is still undergoing decoration, as it doesn’t feel quite complete yet. We have yet to fill our gallery wall, decorate a dead space in our living room and recently, we finally put up a massive art piece on our wall.

When we were decorating our house, we knew we wanted to have a huge art  piece that cover one side of our wall. We went back and forth between graffiti art, a series of B&W photographs, or pop art. One day we toyed around the idea of putting graphic novel print that seems relevant to my comic obsessed husband. Anthony got excited obviously, gathered his favorite graphic novel collection ‘100 Bullets’ and marked his favorite pages.

We decided on one that stands out the most (I get to have the final approval). The illustration is quite unique and the colors set the tone right. We wanted to maintain the  comic strip composition and have it without the frame borders so we decided to print in canvas fabric. The result was beautiful and commands attention upon entering our house. It also ties all the decoration pieces and accessories in our house and what’s best is it’s personal and relevant to us.

My best advise when decorating your home is to take your time in finding pieces that you will fall in love with whether it’s a piece of furniture or a specific candle scent. Your home should be your sanctuary and a place filled with your favorite things.

LYCHEE COCKTAIL

This may sound like a declaration of an alcoholic but I do love having a drink after I come home from work. It’s the ideal way for me to unwind, sit in the sofa with some background jazz music and catch up with my husband. Lately, I’ve been taking advantage of drink o’ clock to experiment with different cocktails. I wanted to recreate a lychee cocktail I had in my friend’s house years ago and after several recipe tested (I was drunk on a random school night), this version is close to perfection. My ONLY advice is to not skimp out on good-quality vodka. Pinky vodka came highly recommended to me but could not find it in the liquor store. Maybe next time!

WATERPROOF IDEAS

I typically shower for a good 30 minutes not because I’m super anal about getting myself cleaned but my mind is always on the roll when under the cascading water. My brain is mostly consumed with never ending to-do list but quite often produced some of my best ideas. After having washed my hair twice a few days ago (I was deep into my thoughts and couldn’t remember if I had shampooed or not), I read this article online that explains why showering is conductive of our best ideas. This is why we keep this waterproof notebook in the shower so I can jot down my “things to remember”, new creative projects, blog ideas or even leave silly notes to Anthony. So the next time you’ve had an epiphany in the shower that may immediately sound ridiculous after you’ve stepped out of the bathroom, know that you are not crazy but a creative genius for 25 minutes.
